The Youth in Asia
A Matter of $60NZ

In a bar in Auckland, an Irishman bet me $10 to hit on a very old, very overweight woman. I did so. Along with being rejected by a very old, very overweight woman, I felt a nagging sense that I had done something wrong and that my $10 was somehow tainted.

About a week later, $60 weaseled its way out of my possession in a manner worthy of it’s own story.

Tally: -50

A few days after that incident, I was walking home from a late night NZIFF movie (Mother, if you wanted to know). I decided to take a different route back to my apartment. On the way, a man was standing in front of a bank handing something out to people. As he was right in the middle of my route home I approached him. He casually slapped $40 into my palm and presumably kept handing out cash to street walkers.

Tally: -10

A month or so later, I was withdrawing money from an ATM at the University of Auckland. I asked for $40 since the ATM only dispensed in increments of of $20. I took my cash out and discovered a blue $10 bill to complement my two green 20’s. I checked my account balance and saw that only $40, not $50 was drawn from my account. The machine had spit out an extra $10 to me.

Tally: 0
